In the ever-increasing desire by those in Mexico to enter the United States illegally, crossing under the cover of darkness may not be enough to be successful. A new method, which is becoming more and more prevalent, is to dig a tunnel from one country to the other:
The bedroom of a luxurious Mexicali residence a block from the border hid a secret tunnel leading to neighboring Calexico, Mexican officials said yesterday.
Inside the passageway, investigators discovered lighting and ventilation equipment, a closed-circuit security system, hydraulic machinery and various tools, according to a statement yesterday by the Mexican Federal Attorney General’s Office, or PGR.
The findings led agents to surmise that “the tunnel was used for illicit activities, presumably related to drug trafficking,” the statement said.
My hat’s off to the Mexican authorities for finding this tunnel and two others in the past fifteen months, that has to something that is quite difficult to detect. Hydraulic equipment does rate high on the decibel meter, but with the cover of several feet of earth, the sound would be easily muffled.
And while it may have been related to drug trafficking, running a parade of non-US citizens through such a tunnel is not outside the realm of possibility. How long until Islamic terrorists are tunneled into this country in such a fashion?
Even worse, what if some already have been?
